Amazon has cut fewer than 1,000 white-collar roles across its Stores division in the US, India, and the UK right in the middle of its flagship Prime Big Deal Days shopping promotion. The retail downsizings arrive amid a stark capital reallocation as the tech giant prepares to pour $220 billion into AI data centers and chips while founder Jeff Bezos forecasts three-day workweeks driven by economic productivity gains.

Amazon has executed a targeted round of workforce reductions eliminating fewer than 1,000 white-collar roles, primarily within its core Stores division. The cuts coincided directly with Prime Big Deal Days—the company's major two-day sales event spanning Tuesday and Wednesday.

The reductions affected corporate and support employees across the United States, India, and the United Kingdom. According to reports from Business Insider, the layoffs impacted several functions across the retail ecosystem, including customer service, selling partner services, marketplace support, and retail engineering.

Workforce Turmoil and Internal Response Affected employees learned of their terminations via email notices, with discussions quickly moving to an internal Slack channel of nearly 37,000 members. Staff raised immediate operational and personal concerns regarding:

  • Severance packages and medical leave continuity.
  • Timelines for system access revocation.
  • Pathways for internal mobility and transfers into alternate business units.

Amazon maintained that the organizational changes within the Stores division were implemented to create a structure that better enables the business to deliver on strategic priorities.

The Contrast: $220 Billion AI Push vs. Retail Cuts The latest trim follows earlier mass restructurings that saw Amazon cut roughly 30,000 positions across late last year and January. However, the retail cutbacks sit alongside aggressive capital expenditures in next-generation computing:

  • Capital Expenditure: Amazon is preparing to deploy $220 billion toward data center buildouts, custom silicon, and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

  • Selective Outreach: The company has reached out to select former employees impacted by earlier restructuring waves regarding specialized technical roles within Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its generative AI units.

Bezos on AI Productivity and Lunar Timelines Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos reiterated that ongoing corporate adjustments reflect corrections after aggressive pandemic-era hiring surges when home deliveries surged.

Looking further ahead, Bezos argued that AI will drive historic economic productivity, allowing individuals the flexibility to support their families on a three-day workweek or avoid working multiple jobs. Outside of labor trends, Bezos also weighed in on the geopolitical space race, stating his belief that the United States can outpace China to achieve a crewed lunar landing by 2028.
