India and the U.S. say recent discussions have moved trade negotiations forward, with both countries working toward an interim agreement. While progress has been reported, unresolved tariff and market-access issues continue to shape the talks.
India and the United States have reviewed potential pathways to reach an interim trade agreement following discussions between Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
According to the Indian government, both sides have made meaningful progress in recent months and remain focused on achieving an agreement that is commercially beneficial and balanced for both countries.
Greer is visiting India for a two-day round of trade discussions, viewed as an important step in maintaining momentum in bilateral economic relations. The visit comes shortly after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump during the G7 summit earlier this month.
Trade between the two countries has remained steady, with Indian exports to the United States reaching $17.29 billion during April and May, slightly higher than the same period a year ago despite uncertainty surrounding future U.S. tariff policies.
India and the U.S. had reached an initial understanding on trade matters in February. However, questions remain over ongoing U.S. investigations related to industrial capacity and labour concerns affecting multiple economies, including India.
New Delhi is seeking favorable tariff terms that would improve the competitiveness of Indian exports in the U.S. market compared with other regional suppliers.
Analysts note that recent legal developments in the United States have added uncertainty to previous tariff proposals, while ongoing investigations could continue to influence negotiations between the two countries.
Following his India visit, Greer is expected to travel to Uzbekistan for discussions with senior government officials on trade and economic cooperation.
