Swedish telecom operator Telia has announced plans to cut roughly 900 roles—about 6% of its workforce—by the end of the year to shave 1 billion Swedish crowns ($100 million) from annual operating expenses. The restructuring aims to localize operational control within national business units while transferring approximately 220 positions, with the company booking 600 million crowns in restructuring charges this quarter.

Swedish telecommunications operator Telia announced on Monday that it plans to eliminate approximately 900 positions across the organization, representing roughly 6% of its global workforce, as part of an effort to trim annual operating expenditures by 1 billion Swedish crowns ($99.96 million).

As of October 1, the Stockholm-headquartered telecom provider employed around 14,100 personnel. The planned reductions are scheduled to conclude before the end of the year.

Decentralization and Country-Unit Realignment The restructuring is focused on simplifying corporate operations and giving local national business units greater autonomy to respond to customer demand:

  • Organizational Realignment: Telia stated that the shift is intended to establish a "simpler, faster and more efficient company" by localizing operations and expanding the authority of country-level units to pursue profitable growth.

  • Role Transfers: In parallel with the job eliminations, Telia plans to transfer approximately 220 roles into their respective local country divisions.

"As the next step in becoming a simpler, faster and more efficient company Telia intends to localize its operations further and strengthen the role of its country units in meeting evolving customer needs and delivering profitable growth."

Financial Impact and Targets -Restructuring Charges: The company will record restructuring charges of roughly 600 million crowns during the current quarter.

  • Cash Flow Timelines: Management noted that the primary cash flow benefits resulting from the cost reductions are expected to materialize mainly in 2027.
  • Guidance Reaffirmed: Despite the organizational changes, Telia maintained its full-year financial outlook for 2026 alongside its mid-term corporate performance targets.
