Tata Consultancy Services plans to ensure that 80% of its future workforce additions possess artificial intelligence and new-age digital capabilities to drive margin expansion and support higher-value contracts. With AI-led engagements reaching 10% of total revenue in the September quarter, leadership indicated that mid-career professionals willing to upskill hold a distinct operational advantage over entry-level talent.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services exporter, is reshaping its recruitment framework by mandating that 80% of its new hires possess artificial intelligence and modern technology capabilities.

The aggressive talent transition aims to bolster operating margins—which remain below management's aspirational targets—by capturing higher-billing, enterprise-grade AI transformation engagements.

Hiring Composition and Skill Benchmarks Speaking to PTI, TCS Chief Operating Officer Arathi Subramanian disclosed details on the skill distribution of recent additions:

  • Q2 Talent Addition: Of the 4,500 personnel onboarded during the second quarter, approximately 25% to 30% held specialized AI skills, while nearly 80% possessed modern, new-age technology capabilities.

  • Ongoing Strategy: The IT major intends to sustain this exact recruitment profile across upcoming quarters, noting that capable specialized talent is accessible in the open market.

  • Revenue Milestone: The share of AI-driven projects expanded to 10% of overall corporate revenue in the September quarter.

Pressure on Entry-Level Openings and Mid-Career Leverage The strategic pivot towards advanced digital proficiencies continues to compress traditional campus and entry-level onboarding volumes across the broader technology industry.

TCS CEO and Managing Director K. Krithivasan emphasized why experienced personnel are currently favored for digital deployments:

  • Mid-Level Advantage: Mid-career engineers who actively upskill hold a decisive competitive edge over entry-level graduates due to their domain expertise, contextual project familiarity, and deep understanding of enterprise client architectures.

  • Niche Talent & Inorganic Moves: Krithivasan affirmed that TCS will prioritize capital investments in specialized, niche technical talent, alongside targeted mergers, acquisitions, and strategic technology ecosystem partnerships.
