Thomson Reuters is adjusting its engineering workforce as it invests more heavily in artificial intelligence. While some roles are being eliminated, the company says it will continue hiring for senior and AI-focused engineering positions.
Thomson Reuters said on Monday that it is reducing a limited number of engineering positions as it continues expanding the use of artificial intelligence across its businesses.
According to an employee who attended an internal technology staff meeting, the layoffs affect employees across multiple regions. The employee, who requested anonymity because the meeting was not public, said the company plans to eliminate up to 500 roles.
Based on Thomson Reuters' 2025 annual report, the reduction represents about 1.8% of its global workforce of approximately 27,100 employees. Within the company's operations and technology division, which has around 9,400 employees, the cuts amount to roughly 5.2%.
The move comes as technology companies increasingly adopt AI tools that improve software development efficiency, leading many firms to reassess engineering staffing levels. Industry-wide, around 120,000 technology workers have been laid off across 228 companies during 2026, according to layoffs.fyi.
A Thomson Reuters spokesperson said the company is aligning its workforce with changing customer needs across legal, tax, and regulatory services. The spokesperson also said affected employees will receive support during the transition.
Despite the workforce reduction, Thomson Reuters expects to create more than 250 net-new engineering positions globally over the next two years, with most of those roles focused on senior-level and AI-native talent.
