Jaguar Land Rover is facing potential job cuts of around 4,000 roles as it works toward £1.7 billion in savings over two years. The UK's business minister plans to meet the company's CEO to discuss the workforce changes and the challenges facing the car industry
Britain's business minister Jonathan Reynolds is set to meet Jaguar Land Rover's CEO this week to discuss potential job reductions at the country's largest carmaker. The meeting comes amid reports that the company could eliminate around 4,000 roles.
Reynolds said the government would like to limit job losses but acknowledged that the operating environment for car manufacturers remains difficult across the UK and Europe. He said discussions would focus on ensuring the company's workforce supports its competitiveness.
Jaguar Land Rover, which is owned by India's Tata Motors, employs around 30,000 people in Britain. The company said it needs to achieve £1.7 billion in savings over the next two years and plans to introduce a voluntary redundancy programme.
JLR said it needs to respond to changing global market conditions. The company has been affected by U.S. tariffs, given the importance of the American market for its Range Rover and Defender models, while growing competition from Chinese vehicles has also affected sales.
According to The Times, the reported 4,000 job reductions could take place over two years through a redundancy programme expected to be announced on Monday.
