Zoho co-founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu has firmly rejected workforce cuts despite industry-wide SaaS contractions, committing instead to redeploying and retraining employees into new products and customer operations as AI productivity shrinks project team sizes. To offset a fourfold increase in server and data center equipment costs, the bootstrapped software major has frozen headcount expansion for 18 months, pared back marketing expenditures, and suspended annual salary increments for the current year.

Zoho co-founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu has publicly reiterated the enterprise software firm’s commitment to avoiding job cuts, distinguishing the bootstrapped company's talent philosophy from venture-backed and publicly traded SaaS peers currently reducing headcount.

Responding to workforce cuts at workflow platform competitor Airtable—which justified downsizing by stating that smaller teams ship faster—Vembu affirmed that Zoho’s approach focuses on internal skill transitions:

"This is normal in SaaS. This is what we have refused to do... [Our approach is to] retrain people to deploy on new products or helping customers better, when AI productivity enables smaller teams."

Vembu marked 2030 as the long-term horizon for evaluating whether macroeconomic conditions would ever necessitate layoffs, emphasizing that Zoho operates with a multi-year balance sheet strategy distinct from market-driven software models.

Cost Compression: AI Infrastructure vs. Compensation While rejecting mass terminations, Vembu warned that the broader employment outlook across the software industry remains difficult as artificial intelligence infrastructure escalates capital requirements:

  • Capital Expenditure Surge: Data center server prices and computing equipment have experienced a fourfold increase, substantially raising operating overhead.

  • Budget Adjustments: To control spending without cutting jobs, Zoho has trimmed marketing expenditures and frozen workforce growth over the past 18 months.

  • Pay Freeze: Employees will not receive their standard annual compensation increases this year, a decision for which leadership publicly apologized to staff.

Business Expansion and Multi-Year Reinvention Despite enterprise cost pressures, Vembu dismissed speculation that generative AI and agentic software will erode SaaS utility, stating that Zoho continues to onboard clients globally and is generating 45% to 50% year-over-year growth in India.

Vembu characterized Zoho as undergoing an organizational and technological reinvention designed to adapt to the generative AI paradigm, noting that the company's trajectory over the next three to five years will validate its long-term strategy.
