CAREERS
Artificial intelligence is influencing both hiring decisions and candidate performance. Surveys indicate some employers see graduates as more replaceable when AI tools support lower-skilled roles, while studies also highlight the mental strain associated with extensive AI use.
AI Changes Perceptions of Graduate Talent
New findings from the ifo Institute show that companies using artificial intelligence are increasingly reassessing the value of university degrees. In a May 2026 survey covering around 3,000 businesses, 19.2% of AI-using firms said graduates could be easily replaced when lower-skilled employees are supported by AI tools.
The impact varies across industries. Retail recorded the highest share at 28.6%, while construction reported a significantly lower figure of 10%.
Concerns Over "AI Brain Fry"
A separate study conducted by Boston Consulting Group involving 1,500 employees in the United States identified a phenomenon described as "AI Brain Fry." Researchers linked intensive use of AI tools to reduced concentration and mental exhaustion.
The findings suggest that employers may increasingly value candidates who can effectively manage digital workloads while maintaining focus and productivity.
Interview Expectations Remain Human-Centered
Career experts continue to emphasize strong communication and preparation during interviews. Candidates are encouraged to present their experience in a structured way, highlight relevant achievements, and clearly explain their interest in a role.
When discussing employment gaps or previous layoffs, advisors recommend providing straightforward explanations and demonstrating initiative through personal projects, learning activities, or volunteer work.
Professionalism Matters for Both Employers and Job Seekers
Recent events in Germany have also highlighted the importance of professional conduct. In Bremen, the head of a local Jobcenter was removed after significant spending on a workspace project. Separately, Germany's Federal Court of Justice ruled that a municipality was responsible for costs related to a failed overseas trip after a passport issue was not properly resolved in official records.
These cases serve as reminders that accountability and diligence remain important across all sides of the employment process.
