Bangladesh is seeking renewed access to Malaysia’s labour market after recruitment restrictions linked to worker exploitation concerns. Both governments have indicated a willingness to improve oversight and safeguard migrant worker welfare while expanding broader economic cooperation.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged Malaysia to reconsider restrictions on hiring Bangladeshi workers during talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysia has traditionally been a major employment destination for Bangladeshi migrants, with overseas remittances playing an important role in Bangladesh’s economy. However, Malaysia halted new recruitment from Bangladesh in 2024 following concerns about labour abuses, including debt-related exploitation and forced labour practices.
The issue follows earlier cases in which migrant workers arrived in Malaysia expecting jobs that were unavailable, leaving many vulnerable to irregular employment and potential legal consequences.
Rahman also discussed the status of undocumented Bangladeshi workers and requested consideration for the return of detained nationals. Both leaders emphasized the need for greater transparency in worker recruitment and stronger protections for migrant employees.
In addition to labour-related discussions, the two countries exchanged agreements covering investment promotion, cultural cooperation, and counterterrorism efforts. Bangladesh and Malaysia also signaled their intention to continue negotiations on a bilateral free trade agreement.
The Malaysia visit marks Rahman’s first foreign trip since taking office. He is scheduled to travel to China next for meetings aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic ties.
