Graduates from India's premier engineering and management institutes are increasingly stepping back from early-stage entrepreneurship even as overall startup creation climbs. Data from market intelligence platform Tracxn reveals that only 79 IIT alumni and 20 IIM graduates founded tech ventures between January and August 2026, compared to 307 and 71 across 2025. In contrast, overall Indian tech venture formation jumped to 6,353 in the same eight-month period, signaling a clear shift toward corporate stability among top-tier alumni.

Graduates from India’s top academic institutions—the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)—are taking the entrepreneurial route in smaller numbers this year, pointing to a noticeable shift in career preferences among the country's elite technical and business talent.

According to data compiled by market intelligence platform Tracxn, only 79 IIT alumni and 20 IIM alumni founded technology startups between January and August 2026. By comparison, 307 IIT alumni and 71 IIM graduates launched ventures throughout 2025. While the eight-month data set cannot be directly equated with full-year totals, the subdued numbers highlight a cautious entrepreneurial appetite among premier campus graduates.

The Ecosystem Divergence: Broad Boom vs. Campus Caution

The pullback from premier alumni stands in sharp contrast to the momentum across India’s broader startup ecosystem:

  • Surging Overall Registrations: Across the broader economy, 6,353 technology startups were founded between January and August 2026. This already eclipses the 3,969 tech ventures incorporated during the entirety of 2025, aided by accessible generative AI tools, reduced software setup overheads, and broader entrepreneurship across Tier-2 and Tier-3 hubs.

  • Flight to Career Stability: Venture capitalists observe that macroeconomic adjustments, extended funding winters, and tech-sector volatility have led many premier graduates to prioritize well-compensated, stable roles at multinational technology firms, GCCs, and management consultancies over early-stage venture risk.

  • Untapped Talent Concerns: Vikram Gupta, founder and managing partner of IvyCap Ventures, pointed out that while expanding startup numbers are encouraging, the subdued participation from IIT and IIM graduates means a critical pool of high-end problem-solving talent remains sidelined from building foundational domestic enterprises.

IIT vs. IIM Dynamics in Venture Formation

Historical ecosystem data indicates that IIT alumni continue to anchor a considerably larger share of enterprise foundings than their business school counterparts:

  • Historical Distribution: Out of 196,704 technology startups tracked in India as of August 2026, 6,147 count at least one IIT founder, while 2,102 feature at least one IIM graduate.

  • The Engineering Anchor: Neha Singh, co-founder of Tracxn, noted that the heavier concentration of IIT founders reflects both a significantly larger alumni base and the deep-tech, engineering-led orientation required to initiate modern technology companies.

  • Staged Executive Inflow: Technical founders typically kick off ventures during the proof-of-concept and code-development phases, with business and scaling expertise from IIM graduates entering leadership teams later as ventures raise institutional growth capital.
