UK bakery chain Greggs is eliminating roughly 740 manufacturing roles over the next two and a half years as part of a £60 million supply-chain overhaul designed to generate £20 million in recurring annual savings. The operational consolidation involves closing manufacturing facilities in Cumbria, Scotland, County Durham, and Greater London, while repurposing a Welsh site into a dedicated distribution hub. The restructuring targets production infrastructure only, leaving front-line retail store teams and shop expansion plans unaffected.

British food-on-the-go bakery chain Greggs has detailed a major restructuring of its domestic manufacturing footprint, confirming plans to eliminate approximately 740 jobs across the UK over the next two-and-a-half years.

The Newcastle-headquartered company plans to close production facilities at four locations:

  • North Lakes near Penrith, Cumbria
  • Pettigrews in Kelso, Scotland
  • Seaham in County Durham
  • Enfield in Greater London

Additionally, manufacturing operations will cease at its Treforest location in Wales, though the facility will remain active as a regional logistics and distribution center. The business announced it will begin formal consultations with trade unions and staff representatives to mitigate the impact on affected personnel.

"Alongside this investment programme, we have carried out a comprehensive review to determine where our future manufacturing activity should most effectively be located to ensure we can continue to offer the exceptional value that Greggs is famous for... such changes, whilst difficult, are necessary to ensure Greggs continues to meet capacity requirements for growth in the years ahead in the most cost-efficient manner."

Retail Footprint Remains Protected The restructuring is strictly focused on production centralization and does not impact high-street or travel-hub storefront operations:

  • Sales Momentum: The announcement follows a 7.7% sales increase in the third quarter of 2026, with year-to-date sales up 7.4% and like-for-like (LFL) sales climbing 2.6%.
  • Store Expansion: The chain has opened 95 outlets and closed 38 this year (achieving 57 net new openings), tracking toward a full-year target of 100 to 110 net new locations.
  • Estate Scale: Greggs operates 2,796 active shops across the UK, consisting of 2,157 company-managed branches and 639 franchised units.

The capital investment aims to modernize long-term production capacity while lowering overhead, ensuring supply chain resilience as retail shop expansion continues.
