Why Building a Career Around One Job May No Longer Be Enough

For years, the traditional idea of a successful career was centred on having one stable job, remaining with an employer, progressing through the ranks and building a professional identity around that role.

That approach is now being questioned as AI, layoffs, changing skill requirements, younger workers and concerns around job security reshape the way people think about employment.

Instead of relying entirely on a single source of employment, some professionals are building what can be described as portfolio careers. This can include combining a full-time role with freelance work, teaching, consulting, personal branding or other income-generating activities.

For example, a software engineer may work on products during the week while teaching coding on weekends and occasionally advising a startup. Similarly, a designer could maintain a full-time position while selling digital templates and accepting selected freelance assignments.

Despite these additional activities, people often continue to describe their primary employment as their actual career, while treating other professional work as a "side hustle."

This raises a broader question about whether a career still needs to be centred around a single employer, or whether multiple skills, professional activities and income streams could become a more accepted way of building a career.
