US job openings dipped to 7.08 million in August, coming in slightly under economic estimates of 7.2 million. Despite energy market volatility tied to regional conflict in Iran, broader employment indicators remain stable, with both involuntary layoffs and voluntary quits holding steady. The data points to a cautious but stable hiring environment, with monthly job additions averaging 80,000 so far this year.
American employers pulled back on open requisitions in August, though broader employment conditions demonstrated resilience against energy price fluctuations linked to military conflict involving Iran.
According to the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) released by the US Department of Labor, total available vacancies declined to 7.08 million, down from a revised 7.34 million in July and below the 7.2 million projected by market consensus.
Core Turnover Trends
- Muted Involuntary Layoffs: Workforce discharges and layoffs saw further decreases, signaling that employers are intent on retaining existing headcount despite macroeconomic crosswinds.
- Quit Rates Steady: The volume of workers voluntarily resigning—often viewed as a primary gauge of candidate confidence—remained largely unchanged month-over-month.
- Hiring Pace: Employers across private corporations, non-profits, and government entities have averaged monthly payroll additions of roughly 80,000 jobs throughout the year. This marks a rebound from 2025's sluggish monthly average of 9,700, which was weighed down by elevated interest rates and policy uncertainty.
Forecasters expect the upcoming monthly jobs release to report around 95,000 net positions added in September, with headline unemployment projected to hold steady at roughly 4.1%.
While hiring velocity remains disciplined rather than expansive, the continued suppression of mass job cuts underscores an enduring degree of employment security across the broader US workforce.
